Sewer Paper for your plants

Wow time really slips by these days. I have not intentionally left this blog alone for a while, it just kind of happened that way. Now that many of the spring chores are now done I have more time to be here! YEAH!!!
Some of the first plants that we started did not make it. I hate to admit this on this blog, but the truth is the truth, the reason WHY some of the plants did not make it was Ozzy, our male Shih Tzu decided to tinkle on some of the containers. I know that is really gross, but it happened and his tinkle killed several plants.
Now that we have moved past that situation, we did replant a lot of things and this time I made sure and kept plants on the ledge so the little guy did not do it again. I was a little miffed at him, but you know I could not stay mad at him long, he is just too cute.
The real subject of this post though is about a plan that we come up with that is working out really well and I wanted to share with you. The part we all hate about gardening is the weeds right? At least for me it is. I would love for my veggies to just be ready on demand, no work involved, but then again, this is the real world.
A couple of years ago I got a roll of sewer paper, yes you read that right, sewer paper. Someone in a forum I go to about embroidery had mentioned they used it for stabilizer in embroidery. I never did like it for that use, so I started using it for tracing patterns onto and using them as a template to cut fabric. But this roll is huge, so there was still a huge portion of it on the roll.
My husband and I were looking at a gardening magazine a couple of weeks ago when the idea come to mind. We seen these round objects that had an “X” cut in the middle. You lay them down and your plant comes up through the “X” and it keeps weeds from being around your plant. We were talking about how nice that was but did not like the price. That is when I looked at him and reminded him we had this entire roll of white sewer paper, even though the rounds in the magazine were black, I wanted to know if we could just make our own.
The very next morning we took the roll of sewer paper to the garden, instead of cutting rounds we just started at the end of a row and started working our way to the other end, stopping at each plant, making and “X” and popping the plant up through.
This was done over a week ago, I wanted to wait to write about it until I decided if it really was a good idea or not. So a little time has lapsed and I can happily report to you that the idea is working really well! My pictures really do not justice to try and explain how we did it.
If you would like a low cost solution on a product that will last a long time you can get your own. The sewer paper can be purchased online or at your local do it yourself center, some place like Lowes, or Home Depot will have it. Just tell them that you want the roll of paper that lines the sewer ditch. It is less then twenty bucks for a roll and you will have enough to use for several years. Just remember to dispose of it properly at the end of the garden season.
